Berwick TEC

TEC students come from different backgrounds but they share ideas: they are looking for an alternative education, a better way to fast track into their career

Meet students

Tiffany Hassum - Nursing Student

"My goal is to complete my VCAL with the TEC, gain entry into Chisholm's Nursing (Division 2) course and then eventually complete my university studies and become registered as a division one nurse," says Tiffany, who at 16 has left Hampton Park Secondary College as a year 10 student.

"The TEC is really industry based and all my learning is relevant," she said, "It's not what I expected, it's better! When I was at school I didn't know what I wanted to do or where I wanted to go".

"Now I'm studying at the TEC, I know my efforts will lead me eventually to a job as a nurse. It is very exciting and will open up so many doors for me – it just feels great!"

Tiffany says completing modules which focus on nursing skills and patient care alongside English, maths and personal development has changed her attitude towards learning, resulting in higher levels of academic achievement.

David Out - Electrotechnology Student

"I can't wait to finish my studies," he said, "I'll have the beginnings of my trade qualifications, my year 12 equivalent, and I know I'll be a lot more confident and prepared for a job."

Eighteen year old David began his Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) with the TEC after realising that his year 11 studies at Cranbourne Secondary College were steering him away from his dream of becoming an electrician.

"I wanted to do an electrical apprenticeship and my career counsellor said, 'don't quit school yet – there's a better way to do it than to quit school'. That's how I knew the TEC was for me. It's not like school at all," he explains, "we're all just normal students like you'd find at any school – except we all just want to be electricians."

One day looking to run his own electrical company, David says for now, he will continue to enjoy the atmosphere and flexible learning environment of the TEC. "I'm happy. My parents are happy. I've made a lot of friends – you can't ask for more than that!"
